Welcome to the You Are Med Podcast

A four-part limited series that captures the nuances, challenges, and magic of what it means to be underrepresented in medicine.

Our Work.

We tell the stories untold - the stories of those with the designation “underrepresented in medicine” or “URMs”. Our intention is that our listeners, no matter what stage they are in on their medical careers, hear our stories and feel more inspired, less alone, and uplifted.

Our Why.

Too often URMs are discouraged in their pursuit of medicine or are faced with challenges throughout their careers in medicine when assessed through the tired definitions of what it means to serve in medicine.

None of that means URMs can’t or won’t become great physicians. In fact, we believe it is the persistence through these challenges that make us EXCELLENT.

So, our stories must be told.

Our Vision.

To create a soft landing space for URMs - away from the perfectionistic, medical environment - where we can share and thrive in our collective, lived experiences.

We want you to take the lessons from our stories and apply them without having to go through the hardships.

What our community is saying

“Finding this podcast was so timely! With starting medical school soon, it’s important to have your tribe, the people who will push you through when you’re running on E. Medicine is already difficult, but it’s even more challenging when you feel like your experiences isolate you. The podcast sheds light on many different challenges and successes. Through listening, I can relate and acknowledge that I too will get through it and become a resilient & compassionate physician leader.”

“Gisel does an amazing job curating these stories not only for aspiring doctors, medical students, residents, and physicians but for every human as well. What really captivates me is the stories behind each interviewee as they navigate their path to medicine, grappling with issues such as race, financial struggle, and family crisis. These stories dig deep into our own emotional states, how we deal with emotions and who we are as a person. Looking forward to hearing more!”

“As a Latina first-year medical student, it’s so inspiring for me to hear these stories from other URM students who are further along in their training. Storytelling in medicine is so powerful especially when it’s done by voices/perspectives that are often not heard or valued, and that’s exactly what this podcast is about! Gisel’s convos are intimate and genuine, make me laugh and tear up, remind me of the beauty of our differences and also the power of our solidarity. This podcast always brings me back to why I’m becoming a physician in the first place. Also, that Intro song is dope!”
